SEND
Transition - Year 6 to 7:
Every September Bingley Grammar School holds an Open Evening for any prospective families to come see our school and meet our staff. The SEND department also holds various SEND tours throughout the year - please contact Daniel Petty for further information.
Every Spring, the primary feeder schools are invited to a meeting with the SENCOS to discuss needs, provision and a transfer of information. We also visit our feeder schools to meet with new parents, children and staff.
The SENCO will attend any Year 6 EHCP annual review meetings and the Pastoral Team will visit for a transition talk to the children. We offer a Transition Open Evening for parents and Transition Days for our children in July too.
Assessments take place in the first term, therefore giving school another chance to identify any other needs a child may have.
Hive Department:
Hive is the mainstream department specialising in SEND needs and learning support. Where some children learn in our Hive classes, Hive also supports the whole school with all areas of SEND. Any child on the SEND register will have a Pupil Profile highlighting their strengths/difficulties/needs and strategies that help them to learn.
Bingley Grammar School employs two qualified SENCOS and 4 primary school teachers to help bridge the gap between primary and secondary. Many of us have worked in primary settings, SEND specialist settings and have years of experience in education and SEND. We have specialists in Dyslexia, Exam Access Arrangements, Neurodiversity, Cognition and Learning. We also have regular meetings, training and advice from the Local Authority.
There are two classes in year 7 and 8 within Hive, which specialise in cognition and learning. These classes are for children working much further behind age related expectations and need a greater level of support. Hive classes have additional literacy, phonics and numeracy lessons/interventions and more adult support where possible. There is a class of 12 students and a class of 18 students in each year group. The SENCO will allocate the spaces based on cognitive need, SEND need, SATS results and transitional information.
There is also a Hive class for years 9, 10 and 11, each with up to 12 students. The SENCO will allocate these spaces based on need. These classes are smaller groups, working below age related expectations and may have greater adult support. The aim is to achieve outcomes at GCSE or other similar qualifications. These classes will do Core subjects, and then Art and Geography as options to avoid a cognitive overload.
Hive department supports any child with additional needs at BGS. We offer intervention, SEMH support and SEND assessment to any child within school who may require this.
Within Hive, we have Thrive; a space for children with SEND needs to step away from learning if overwhelmed or overstimulated. Anyone in school can access Thrive if and when needed. Thrive has independent learning areas, personalised teaching areas, intervention areas and a breakout space.
Social Times can be accessed through Hive too. We have a Breakfast, Break and Lunchtime Club (BBLC) in Hive designed for children who need a quiet, calm space in social times. This area includes sensory lighting, adult supervision and social intervention for friendship building.
7GB
7GB is a nurture Class in year 7 only, designed to bridge the gap between primary and secondary for more anxious learners. This is led by Mrs Fiona Greening. This class is smaller, and spaces are allocated by Mrs Charlotte Robinson, Head of Year 7 based on transitional information.
The Resourced Provision (RP):
The RP is led by Mrs Ann Holden. The RP is Local Authority lead, not school lead. The RP is for children with communication and interaction needs, with a higher level of funding at EHCP level. The RP is run separately to mainstream school, but we ensure we work together cohesively. The RP students are welcome to access all of the above, supported by the RP staff. The RP has its own building with sensory lighting, break out spaces, playgroup, interventions and lessons. The RP children are encouraged to bring their friends to clubs, social times and interventions. If you require further information on the RP, please contact Ann Holden directly.
