Grade 5 in English Language & Maths + either Grades 6, 6, 5 in triple science (with 6 in Chemistry) or Grades 6, 6 in Combined Science* * Students are also able to apply for one pure science A Level with a grade 5-5 in Combined Science or a grade 5 in the relevant science (if the English & Maths requirements are met). However students will be required to take the Applied Science course alongside the pure science in order to support this pathway. |

Students are required to provide their own stationery (to include folder and scientific calculator) and are requested to purchase their own textbook (£30.00), but this may be purchased back if in good condition at the end of the course. A revision guide is not compulsory, but students may wish to purchase this to help with final exam preparation (approx. £15.00). |

How will you be assessed?
At the end of the 2-year course students sit 3 written exams 2hrs long each. Students are also continually assessed during the courses practical investigations leading to a practical competency certificate. Exams are based around testing & applying your knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, processes, techniques and procedures. These are linked to theoretical and practical contexts. Students are also expected to analyse, interpret and evaluate scientific information, ideas and evidence. Within the written exams they are also expected to show practical design skills developing & refining practical design procedures.
What will I study?
Content covered includes detailed knowledge of the atom, amount of substance, acids & bases, redox reactions, electrons in relation to structure and bonding, periodicity, Enthalpy changes, qualitative equilibrium, Organic
chemistry, organic syntheses, Entropy & free energy and qualitative & quantitative analytical techniques. All are supported by practical work that is embedded within the learning and a ‘How science works’ approach such that students can apply knowledge to unfamiliar situations. A combination of theory & practical work contributes to the achievement of the practical endorsement certificate.
How will this course support my future plans?
You will study data manipulation, collection, analysis & interpretation, thus developing your mathematical skills. You will have the opportunity to develop presentation techniques & styles whilst carrying out independent research. These skills are highly regarded across multiple disciplines & by many employers & universities. They will allow entry on to a wide variety of further education courses including not just medicine, dentistry & pharmacy but also many STEM based routes, as well as courses focusing on critical thinking skills such as law.
