After a few weeks of creating character development and confusion the party set off from Neverwinter with a wagon of provisions that they were paid a handsome 10 gold pieces to deliver to the village of Phandelver by the the dwarf, Gundren, who was excited about a newly discovered mine and the mysteries and riches it may contain.

Half a day out from the parties destination we came across two horses slain by arrows. Upon inspection we could discern that these were Gundrens and his warrior escort Sildar Hallwinters mounts.

As we searched for clues (an empty map case was found) we were attacked! Two small but bloodthirsty goblins came screaming down out of the surrounding trees, supported by two others who fired black arrows from their crossbows.

The party prepared for their first melee encounter and were hopeful of success, there were seven of us after all!

As the goblins had the initiative, they struck first aiming for the two warriors. Amazingly they struck each one with sword and arrows and rendered both unconscious!

However it was the turn of our wizard to take action! Would they cast a mighty spell? Saving their prone friends? Unfortunately not, our wizard was not the best at making decisions and instead of consulting their spellbook chose to draw a sword, dropped it on their foot and bent down to pick it up.

The goblins saw their chance and attacked the wizard. Fortunately at the same time as they were trying to pick up their sword, the two goblins that struck with weapons missed, as did one of the arrows. However, the last arrow struck as they bent over (ouch) knocking out the third party member in quick succession!

Next, our bard took their turn and there was no dithering in their decision! Finally someone who can save the group. It turned out that they were a complete coward as they immediately cast a disguise self spell and tried to disguise themselves as a slightly more overweight, dead body so that they would not be attacked! I can see that we won't be relying on our bard anytime soon!

Fortunately, our two clerics were decisive and competent, choosing spells to heal the fallen warriors with mighty heals, returning both to near full health!

As we left the encounter our rogues struck with their weapons, injuring one goblin but the battle is very much on after half term!
