Bingley Grammar School

Young carers

Support is available to any of our Young Carers in school.

We understand that school and home life may be difficult for students with additional responsibilities, and offer a space in school where Young Carers of any age can get the support and guidance they need.

          What is a Young Carer?

A young carer is a person under 18 who cares, unpaid, for a person who has any type of physical and/or mental disability or misuses substances such as alcohol or drugs.

They may:

  • Look after a parent
  • Care for a sibling or other family member
  • Do extra jobs in and around the home (such as cooking, cleaning, or helping someone get dressed)
  • Give physical help to a family member who is disabled or ill
  • Give emotional support

           Meet Our Young Carers Coordinator

Mrs Faunch is our Young Carers Coordinator in School

Mrs Faunch joined Bingley Grammar School in 2009 working in the Attendance Office and then as Student Support Officer for the past 7 Years.   Whilst Mrs Faunch is new to the role of Young Carers Coordinator, she understands and recognises the importance of getting the right support for all our students individual needs, whether that's giving them time and a safe space to talk or liaising with other support services such as Young Carers Resource where additional help is required.   Mrs Faunch is a mum of two children and with this responsibility has lived experiences, knowledge and appreciation of the daily challenges of family life that parents/carers/children face and genuinely cares about supporting and helping all our students succeed and reach their full potential and make school a positive experience and ensure there are no barriers to their learning

Students are welcome to talk to Mrs Faunch at any time about any concerns or issues they may have in school, regarding their role as a Young Carer.

           Young Carers Drop in Session

Mrs Faunch holds a Young Carers drop in session during Monday Tutor time in A4 (Quinn Block) 8.35 am until 8.50 am.

This is an opportunity for Young Carers of all year groups to get together, have a chat and realise they're not alone.

Students can attend the drop in session whenever they wish. While there is no obligation for a Young Carer to join, this is an ideal time to start the week off positively.

I think I’m a Young Carer. What do I do?

Contact Mrs Faunch @ anita.faunch@bingleygrammar.org

She can arrange to meet with you and discuss the support available.

I think my child is a Young Carer. What do I do?

If you are a parent/carer and would like to refer your child to Young Carers Resource, please contact school and ask for Mrs Faunch or email anita.faunch@bingleygrammar.org
